Christopher Cooper takes on….THE SAHARA!!

Wow, in around 5 weeks, Mae’s Godfather (Christopher Cooper – the man, the myth, the legend!) will be embarking on his journey to the sands, to take on the gruelling multi-stage adventure through a landscape in one of the world’s most inhospitable climates on the planet – the Sahara Desert! Yes, thats right, the Sahara Desert (because cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End and tackling the Helvellyn Triathlon wasn’t quite challenging enough)….. And it’s all for the love of Mae…

Mae and godfather, Chris

Mae and godfather, Chris

In Chris’ words, “She’s the perfect motivation for sticking to the daily training plan and reason to grin and bear the aching muscles, fatigue and brutal blisters that the race will bring”.

On Saturday 8th April Chris will be standing under a start banner somewhere in the Moroccan Sahara. Ahead of him will be 156 miles of sand dunes, some reaching 1000m in height, desert tracks across challenging terrain, including salt-pans, dried river beds, rocky plains, jebals (the Moroccan word for ‘mountains’) and six days of 50+ degree heat as he takes on the ‘toughest footrace on earth’, the Marathon Des Sables (MDS).

The Marathon des Sables is a 6 day race and there is only one rest day! The distance is 156 miles, with the longest stage being around 55 miles. The French Commissaires provide you with water and flapping leaky tents, but as for the rest, you’re on your own. Self navigating and carrying well over 12 kilos of food and kit is all paart of the deal!

”The MDS is a rare antidote to the oh-so congenial lives that we tend to lead in the West. It is an extreme version of ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’ – though with more pain, more heat, more thirst and just that little bit more deprivation.” Bill Coles, Author and Journalist.

So, you’re probably wondering why?

A 1-hour physiotherapy session for Mae costs £60, so it is Chris’ aim to raise funds which will cover Mae’s physio costs for one session per week, for a year, in the knowledge that it will help her immeasurably.

We ask that you give anything you can to support Chris and this great cause. In supporting Chris you are ultimately supporting Mae. Every donation gets Chris another step closer to his goal! Every £1 adds up to supporting Mae in her independence and we are so grateful for your support.

Chris will train, and will finish the race, but it’s your donations that really make the difference – and the difference those donations will make is what this is really about.

Sponsored walk – 7 days of fundraising!

We have recently been approached by Dave and three friends as they are undertaking a mammoth walk accross Peddar’s Way and asked Hope4Mae if they could fundraise along the way! You can see the extent of their journey on the National Trail website – it’s quite a feat!

Dave and Team will start their walk today, and continue their 95 mile journey until 26th September. Please show your support by donating on our Just Giving page, quoting ‘Peddar’s Way’ as reference.

Here’s hoping the weather is knid and the blisters are few for Dave and the Team. We’ll let you know how they get on. Thanks to all involved!

We did it! Please show your support :-)

On Saturday our team of 15 Hope4Mae supporters ran the Colour Obstacle Rush 2016 at Rother Valley Country Park in Sheffield.

With varying abilities (and ages!) we forged ahead to overcome obstacles – of the bouncy, wobbly and space-hoppery type, plus powder paint thrown from all angles!

It was a fantastic day and we will let you know how much we have raised when donations are all in.

We are continuing to raise funds to pay for Mae’s ongoing rehabilitation costs, which are not supported by the NHS. A single session of Physiotherapy costs £60, so all donations are welcome, thank you!

Please consider pledging – any amount adds up – in the following ways:
